The Corner House Curriculum

We follow Development Matters, which is a non-statutory curriculum guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage. It provides support for Early Years Practitioners in delivering quality education and care for children from birth to age five. The curriculum focuses on how children develop and learn, offering practical guidance on planning, assessment, and creating effective learning environments.

We also incorporate the Curiosity Approach providing children with a calm, stress-free environment filled with open-ended resources. Monthly activity sheets are also provided to take home to encourage family involvement along with Achievement Trees in each room. You can share what your
child has achieved at home to support planning for your child’s needs.

The nursery takes on board the child’s current interests and how they learn, based on the Characteristics of Effective Learning, creating and thinking critically. This ensures that each child’s individual needs are met and provided for.

We use broad topics as a starting point to support the prime and specific areas of learning and development eg. a theme of people who help us will include health and self-care, people and communities as well as giving opportunities for communication and language, maths and expressive arts and design. Cooking activities, a great favourite, supports learning and development including healthy eating, and self care.

We have a graduate EYPS who oversees the implementation of the curriculum for all the children. Children also enjoy cookery classes and music and movement sessions. We have outings to the park, post office, local shops and visits to the beach, weather permitting to make full use of our proximity to the wonderful Bournemouth beaches.
